ECHO ON BOARD FOR DRAGONBOAT RACING SPECTACULAR
Dream-A-Way Dragonboat Race Event

11:40 - 08 March 2008

The Echo is getting into the heart of the action to help a city charity by sponsoring a spectacular dragonboat racing event on the Quay.

Editor Marc Astley today announced that the Echo would be among the sponsors when Dream-A-Way hosted its first ever dragonboat racing challenge on Sunday, August 31.

The event will help raise cash for the charity's work providing holidays and day trips for seriously ill or disabled people from across the South West.

It could also be a big attention-grabber on the Quay, as the dragonboats will be a stunning sight when they set sail.

Dragonboats, which originated in China, are long, narrow and human-powered.

When racing, they carry a large drum and are rigged with decorative oriental dragon heads and tails.

Dream-A-Way committee member Gill Freeman said the charity was overjoyed that the Echo was getting on board to help the good cause, after it appealed for support.

She was also keen to thank the event's other sponsors - Heavitree Brewery, South West Crane Hire and Supreme Cleaning.

And she hoped the Echo's involvement would help prompt others to come forward, as Dream-A-Way was still seeking four more sponsors to donate £1,000 each. Teams are also invited to snap up places now.

"There's been a huge amount of interest already in what will be an amazing day for the competitors and all their supporters and spectators," Gill said.

She added that the aim was for the event to be self-funding so that every penny raised could make a profit for charity.

Details about the event have now been posted on Dream-A- Way's website, making it even easier to get involved.

Teams, which can be made up of workmates, friends, neighbours or other groups, are advised to book as soon as possible. A maximum of 21 teams of 17 people can take part.

Teams will be charged £500 to enter, and each team member will also have to raise at least £30 for Dream-A-Way.

The Echo has previously reported how the charity has helped provide holidays for deserving people over the years, ranging from paying towards a fishing holiday for city teenager James Dury, 18, who suffered head injures in a road accident, to donating money for brave disabled girl Ashleigh Montgomery, now 14, of Kent Close, Wonford, to swim with dolphins in Florida.

Anyone interested in supporting the event can write to Dream-A-Way at 2 Lisa Close, Exeter, EX2 5JB, call 07734 281401 or visit the below link for further information.
